What is alcohol intolerance?

Alcohol intolerance is a genetic condition that causes facial flushing, nausea, headaches, and a rapid heartbeat in those who suffer from it. When alcohol enters the body, it is first broken down into aldehyde before being broken down further into acetic acid by Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) enzymes. Patients with intolerance lack the enzymes to break aldehydes down into acetic acid. This causes a buildup of toxic aldehyde in the body, causing various symptoms immediately and over time.
